Call for Proposals: Honors Seminars AY 2027-2029

October 29, 2026

The University Honors Program (UHP) at ISU is once again soliciting course proposals for Honors Seminars for the 2027-2029 academic years.

The Honors Seminar, HONS 3391, offers faculty an opportunity to teach about an exciting topic that does not fit into their typical teaching obligations or ISU's regular course catalog. We particularly encourage submissions that are interdisciplinary or push at the edges of the disciplinary box.

Honors Seminars

  • Are open to all Honors students and average 15-20 students per course
  • Are 8-week, 1-credit classes
  • Faculty should design their courses to require about 6 hours of student work each week. The six hours typically includes 90-120 minutes in class plus additional assignments and activities to be done outside of class
  • Should align with UHP's core principles and goals, which can be found at http://www.isu.edu/honors/about/
  • May be co-taught
  • Count as overload teaching. (Faculty whose courses are selected will sign a 1-credit contract for additional pay through UHP)
  • Will be taught twice, once each year for two successive years

Submission of Proposal
Interested faculty should secure approval from their department chair prior to submitting a course proposal and prepare a brief proposal that includes the following information:

  • Name, department, and email address of each instructor of the proposed course
  • Course title for the seminar
  • Course description of up to 250 words. Your description might include answers to questions such as the following:
    • What do you hope students will take away from your course?
    • What question sits at the heart of this course?
    • How is this topic especially relevant now?
    • What is a representative assignment, discussion topic, or activity?

Proposals can be submitted to johnmarg@isu.edu until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18. Proposals will be evaluated by the UHP Advisory Committee, and successful proposals will be announced in December. Selected courses will begin in either Fall 2027 or Spring 2028.
