A New Gathering Place Around Swanson Arch
October 12, 2026
For generations of Bengals, Swanson Arch has marked important moments in their Idaho State University experience. Now, a new project will create a gathering place around the historic landmark and carry it into the university's future.
The Idaho State University Foundation has made a $1 million foundational gift to help make Swanson Arch at Foundation Plaza possible. As Idaho State celebrates its 125th anniversary, an alumni campaign will seek to raise an additional $125,000 by Jan. 1, 2027, giving Bengals an opportunity to help complete the project.
ISU Foundation President, Steve Rice said, “This beautiful plaza located east of Frazier Hall will serve students, faculty, the community and all friends of Idaho State for generations to come. The name, Swanson Arch at Foundation Plaza, pays homage to all those before us, those with us today, and all those who will follow us in support of this great institution.”
Built in 1902 as the entryway of the first building constructed on the Idaho State campus, Swanson Arch is one of the university's strongest connections to its early history. It is also central to some of ISU’s most important traditions, including New Student Convocation and March Through the Arch at graduation.
Swanson Arch at Foundation Plaza will preserve this connection to Idaho State's past while creating an updated, beautified space for students, alumni, families and friends to gather, celebrate and make memories.
The completed space will be fully ADA accessible, including access through the historic arch itself. The planned plaza will accommodate up to 1,200 guests and will feature:
- beautified gathering areas
- an elevated event stage
- improved landscaping and accessible pathways
- an updated and extended History Walk that highlights important moments in Idaho State's history
Alumni gifts of any amount that feels meaningful will contribute to the $125,000 campaign goal. The campaign is designed to give Bengals an accessible way to support a tangible project connected to their own Idaho State experiences.
“We’re looking for more ways to build on opportunities for alumni and the community to connect with Idaho State,” says Stephanie Adams, President of the ISU Alumni Association. “We have alumni who care deeply about this university, and we have students doing amazing things. This is one opportunity to bring those two groups together in a meaningful way.”
