Remembering Judge Peter D. McDermott: A Lifelong Advocate for Justice and Idaho State
February 3, 2025
The Idaho State University community mourns the loss of Judge Peter D. McDermott, a cherished alumnus, mentor, and friend, who passed away on January 9, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Pocatello on September 23, 1939, Peter embodied a profound commitment to his community, his profession, and his alma mater. A graduate of ISU and the University of Idaho College of Law, Peter’s legal career spanned decades of service, including his appointment to the Sixth District Court by Governor John Evans in 1981.
Peter’s contributions extended beyond the courtroom, where he was known for his dedication to justice and compassion for those seeking a second chance. He mentored countless pre-law students at ISU, offering guidance that shaped the next generation of legal professionals.
While a student at ISU, Peter was deeply involved in campus life. He joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity, serving as President during his senior year. Throughout his life, he generously shared his legal expertise with university groups, individuals, and programs, often providing advice at no cost.
Peter was highly regarded within the legal profession and frequently recognized by his peers. After serving 28 years on the bench, he retired in 2009. To honor his service, the Bannock County Commissioners named his courtroom after him. Following his retirement, Peter continued his passion for justice, serving as an appellate judge for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes.
In 2005, Peter established the Peter A., Patricia L., and Peter D. McDermott Scholarship Endowment to support pre-law students at ISU. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time junior or senior Political Science (Pre-Law) major with preference given to students from Bannock or Custer counties.
Peter’s leadership and generosity extended to many areas, including the Bengal Athletic Boosters and his selection as Grand Marshal for the 2013 Homecoming Parade—an honor that brought him immense pride.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic achievements, Peter was an avid outdoorsman. He found solace fly fishing on the Big Lost River near Mackay and enjoyed sharing Idaho’s natural beauty with family and friends.
Peter is survived by his loving companion, Diane Bilyeu; his daughter, Lynell Baty (Kirk); granddaughters, Brianne Minor (Jake) and Brittany Truman (Boden); his stepson, Tod Roebuck (Jen); and numerous extended family members. His legacy of generosity, mentorship, and service will continue to inspire the countless lives he touched within and beyond ISU.
