May 8, 2025
The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) has announced the appointment of Matt Freeman to its Board of Commissioners as an academic representative from a public four-year institution. The term of his appointment is April 2025 through July 2026.
NWCCU is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a national accrediting agency. It serves as an institutional accreditor for public and private higher education institutions across the United States and internationally, including Alaska, Arizona, British Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
As a commissioner, Freeman will play a key leadership role in helping to ensure member institutions are meeting established accreditation policies and standards, with direct impact on student success, institutional accountability, and the overall quality of higher education.
“I am honored to be appointed to serve on the NWCCU Board of Commissioners,” said Freeman. “Accreditation plays a vital role in upholding the quality and integrity of our colleges and universities. It ensures that institutions remain accountable, continually improve, and most importantly, provide students with the education and opportunities for success they deserve. I look forward to contributing to this important work.”
Freeman currently serves as the Executive Director of Relations for the Albion Center for Professional Development at Idaho State University, where he leads efforts to strengthen partnerships with K–12 school districts and state departments of education across the country.
Freeman is also a Senior Policy Fellow with the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) association, and is currently serving a third term as a governor-appointed commissioner on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).
Freeman holds a J.D. from the University of Idaho and received a B.A. in political studies from Whitworth University.
