ISU School of Performing Arts to present Sarah Ruhl’s “The Clean House”
January 27, 2025
Idaho State University’s School of Performing Arts is proud to present its third show of the season “The Clean House’” Showtimes are on February 7-8, and 13-15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre at the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.
Written by Sarah Ruhl, "The Clean House" is a whimsical comedy that centers around Matilde, a Brazilian cleaning woman who dreams of becoming a comedian. The story follows her experiences working for a family of quirky doctors, whose chaotic lives often reflect their messy surroundings. As Matilde grapples with her comedic aspirations and her melancholic thoughts, she observes her employers navigating their own challenges. Throughout this enchanting narrative, the characters come to terms with love, loss, and the intricate journey of the heart. This unlikely ensemble creates hilariously unexpected situations while learning to cope with the complexities of relationships and grief. The production leaves audiences with a profound understanding that both love and sorrow are essential elements of life. This show is rated PG-13 for adult language and themes.
Ruhl's original production premiered in 2004 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2005. This off-Broadway hit will feature six ISU actors in the intimate setting of the Black Box Theatre. ISU students and faculty have envisioned this renownef production from start to finish, creating a show-stopper to kick off the 2025 year.
The director of the production, Jef Petersen, remarks, "Ruhl is exploring the idea that we can try to keep our 'house' as clean as possible, but sometimes life makes a mess of it. The audience will likely resonate with the various ways each character deals with tragedy. Above all, I hope they leave with a sense of the importance of caring for one another despite our differences."
Idaho State Theatre will offer concessions on the evening of April 7 during before the show, at intermission and at the end of the show for our Afterglow event. Please join us for the Afterglow to hear from the director and meet the actors, creative teams, and crew. Selections will include beer, wine, soft drinks, and delicious snacks.
