Faculty Lecture Series: Can You Be a Hero? Effective Altruism and a Meaningful Life
October 20, 2025
All are invited to the next faculty lecture series, "Can You Be a Hero? Effective Altruism and a Meaningful Life," by Jim Skidmore, Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Philosophy, on Oct. 21 at noon in REND 129.
We all admire moral heroes like Nicholas Winton, who rescued hundreds of Jewish children from certain death in the Holocaust; but we don’t see such heroism as a realistic goal in our own lives. This talk introduces Effective Altruism, a growing movement that uses reason and evidence to find the most effective ways to help others. Skidmore argues that Winton’s heroism, and a meaningful life, is within our reach.
