The Suzanne L. and Roy F. Miller, Jr. Scholarship, A Tribute to a Lifelong Love for Music and Education

February 15, 2024

Roy and Suzanne Miller

In a heartfelt tribute to a life filled with music, education, and shared experiences, Roy Miller has established the Suzanne L. and Roy F. Miller, Jr. Scholarship in honor and remembrance of his late wife, Suzanne. The endowment, totaling $105,000, will provide scholarships for undergraduate or graduate music degree students at ISU.

Roy and Suzanne married in 1994 and spent many wonderful years traveling around the world, enjoying their love of skiing at some 30 ski areas in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and supporting music and the arts. Roy established this scholarship using funds he and Suzanne had designated for continued travel as a tribute to the wonderful life and joyous experiences they shared.

Suzanne exemplified her commitment to education with a life spent as an educator and volunteer. After graduating from Idaho State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in special education as well as an administration certificate, she taught for over 35 years, mostly in 6th grade. Following her retirement, Suzanne became a volunteer ombudsman for the elderly, advocating tirelessly for their needs. She thought of this as one of her proudest achievements. Before passing in 2023, she worked tirelessly to help high school girls secure scholarships and volunteered for various educational events.

Roy, a prominent developer in Eastern Idaho and beyond, successfully navigated a career as a developer, retailer, and investor. His first passion, though, has always been music, specifically percussion. His skills led him to play drums and vibraphone with a variety of jazz groups and to serve as the pit drummer for stage productions. He also participated in the Idaho Falls Symphony, Idaho State Civic Symphony, and for over 60 years, the Pocatello Municipal Band.

The Suzanne L. and Roy F. Miller, Jr. Scholarship will support academically outstanding candidates with financial need. It not only preserves the memory of this remarkable couple but also paves the way for future musicians to pursue their dreams, reflecting the couple's unwavering commitment to the arts and education.
