Bengal Speakers Face Stiff Competition on Pioneer Trail

February 15, 2024

The Idaho State Bengal Debate team claimed third in all-university sweepstakes at the 42nd Annual Pioneer Trails Open hosted by Casper College [WY] and Southeastern Illinois College [Harrisburg, IL]. Sixteen colleges participated online in this rare winter contest in the Rocky Mountain Region. Entries registered from colleges as far east as Virginia.

The Bengals started competition Friday morning, February 9 and completed the online competition Saturday night. All six Idaho speakers participated Friday in IPDA Debate and spoke well enough to take 4th place overall in IPDA Speaker Sweepstakes.

On Saturday, Isaac Brambila, a sophomore from Pocatello majoring in secondary education, and Mandy Hesby, a junior from Dietrich studying social work paired-up to deliver their highly successful "Duo Performance". The pair earned their way to the finals and captured fourth place tournament-wide. Brambila also performs a Program of Interpretation which won him a trip to the final round and overall 6th place in the tournament.

The team departs for Pi Kappa Delta Nationals in March.
