ISU Debate wins Great Salt Lake Tournament

The Idaho State Rupp Debate team shut out stiff competition Saturday night, claiming first and second in the regional competition., January 14, at the Great Salt Lake Classic in Salt Lake City. ISU also claimed second place honors for high speaker points.

In semifinal rounds, veteran debater Joseph Tyler, a Pocatello senior preparing to graduate in Global Studies, beat out Gabriel Clark from the College of Eastern Idaho to advance to the final round. Tyler argues the negative position on “The G20 should create a seat for the African Union. On the opposite side of the bracket, Pocatello’s Jonathon Stoneback, an ISU PreLaw freshman, upset Blake Gaynor of Northern Arizona University arguing against “tenure is bad for education”. This resulted in a close for Idaho State where the top two competitors in the bracket win their rounds and meet head-to-head. ISU’s Ashley Helm, a Star Valley, WY student, missed the final rounds by one point. Eleven colleges from the Rocky Mountain region participated.

The UTEP Invitational was held the same weekend. ISU’s Trey Mitchell, a Pocatello Political Science & Philosophy major delivered 4th place in Poetry,  and Joseph Tyler was awarded first place for both Program of Oral Interpretation and Extemporaneous speaking. The squad also earned a 3rd place sweepstakes for overall speaking quality. Eight regional colleges participated.
