Mental Health of Students Training for Faculty/Staff

August 26, 2019

Idaho State University Counseling and Testing Service will offer the RESPOND training again this fall semester. As you have likely heard, students across the country are increasingly reporting high degrees of mental health concerns and Idaho State University is no exception. In the 2018-19 year, more than 160 ISU faculty and staff participated in the RESPOND training. We are so appreciative of everyone’s eagerness to become more knowledgeable about mental health and how to help students who may be struggling. Comments from past participants include:

“I have more confidence in how to handle certain situations than I did at the beginning of the training.”

“I appreciated the practical exercises and role plays; they reinforce the need to engage, even when it is awkward or uncomfortable.”

“Though some of the information was familiar, I greatly appreciated the expanded information beyond just the QPR discussion.  This was very helpful.”

The RESPOND training is an in-depth workshop designed to help faculty and staff feel more comfortable and better prepared to respond to students who are experiencing emotional distress by offering support but also knowing when to refer to a professional counselor. We welcome and encourage faculty and staff to take part in this workshop. While it is a significant commitment of your time, the workshop is interactive and allows ample time for questions and discussion. In the past, workshops tend to fill fast, so please let us know ASAP should you want to attend. Attendance is limited to 30 participants.
