ISU Director of Campus Public Safety Stephen Chatterton retires after 23 years of service

Idaho State University campus public safety Director Stephen Chatterton has retired after 23 years of service to ISU.

‘We want to commend Director Chatterton for his dedicated and exemplary service to Idaho State University, helping this University be one of the safest in the nation during his tenure,” said James Fletcher, ISU Vice President for Finance and Administration. “He was a consummate professional.”

Stephen ChattertonUnder Chatterton’s leadership, ISU Campus Public Safety received accreditation by the Idaho Chiefs of Police Association this fall. Chatterton was also honored with the ISU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2012.

As the ISU Director of Public Safety, Chatterton was instrumental in making ISU one of the safest college campuses in the nation, as recognized by several national publications. Following a distinguished career in law enforcement that began with the Bannock County Sheriff Department, the U.S. Army, the State of Idaho Department of Law Enforcement and the Idaho National Laboratory, Chatterton brought his skills to ISU. Chatterton has more than 37 years of state service between ISU and the Idaho State Police.

He obtained a Certificate of Completion, Police Technology from ISU in 1968 and his bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from ISU in 1980. At ISU, Chatterton was a principal investigator for many grants, including a $1 million grant from the Homeland Defense and Justice Department fund that improved and upgraded ISU security programs.

Cal Edwards has been named as ISU interim director of public safety. Edwards is the coordinator and master instructor of the ISU College of Technology Law Enforcement Program and chief of police for the city of Inkom.

A national search for a new director of public safety will be undertaken in the next few weeks.
