Idaho State University announces hire of Lewis Eakins as director of public safety

Idaho State University has announced the hire of Lewis Eakins as new director of public safety.

Lewis Eakins“I am very pleased to announce that after a national search, Mr. Lewis Eakins has been appointed as the director of public safety for Idaho State University,” said Phil Moessner, ISU associate vice president of Facilities Services. “Eakins has more than 35 years experience in security and law enforcement, most recently serving as the director of public safety and chief of police for Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama.”

Eakins holds a master’s degree in security management, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and business administration, and numerous certifications including as a Certified Protection Professional and Certified Emergency Manager.

He is also currently pursuing a Ph.D. in public policy and administration with a concentration in security policy and coordination from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eakins is a member of the Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society and is expecting to earn his Ph.D. in 2015.

He will begin his duties on May 18. Eakins replaces interim director Cal Edwards, who served admirably since Steve Chatterton retired in January.
