A free concert performed by the Idaho State-Civic Symphony’s Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings will be held on April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Stephens Performing Arts Center.

The Junior Strings, under the direction of Kathryn Chojnacki, orchestra director of District 25, will perform “The Irish Washerwoman Trio- Traditional” by Dianna Denley, “Two Dances” by Henry Purcell, “The Canary Bird” by Mozart and “German Dance” by Mozart. The Junior Strings ensemble was formed by the Idaho State-Civic Symphony Association to provide musicians in grades three through six an opportunity to improve their personal performance and introduce them to ensemble work.

The Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Colin Brien, director of bands at Century High School, will perform “Norwegian Dance No. 2” by Edward Grieg, arranged by Merle Issaac, “March to the Scaffold” by Hector Berlioz, arranged by Richard Meyer, “Waltz Op. 18” by Chopin, arranged by Colin Brien, including a solo with Gabriel Lowman on piano, “Berceuse and Finale” by Igor Stravinsky, arranged by Merle Isaac and “Star Wars Epic–Part 1” by John Williams, arranged by Robert Smith.

“Star Wars Epic—Part 1” includes the pieces, “Revenge of the Sith” from “Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” “Across the Stars” from “Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and “Duel of the Fates” from “Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace.” The Youth Orchestra is made up of students in middle and high school, attending public, private or home school.

Both ensembles are designed to foster the growth and development of strings and orchestral experiences for young musicians in Southeast Idaho. The young musicians have an opportunity to play with a larger ensemble than possible with the orchestras of a single school, and also to perform twice each season in the Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Next years Youth Orchestra Auditions will be held on May 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. and May 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. Kids interested in auditioning must go to www.thesymphony.us to register for an audition time. All of the audition music is found on the website as well.
For more information about auditions contact Youth Orchestra Manager Tamara Olsen at tamara.olsen@hotmail.com or Youth Orchestra Director Colin Brien at cjbrien@gmail.com.

Admission is free, and everyone is invited to attend. Come witness the future of our local music scene, and help encourage and inspire the young musicians.
