Idaho State University senior Kevin Higgins one of 60 nationally selected to present undergraduate research on Capitol Hill

Idaho State University chemistry senior Kevin Higgins, who worked in ISU chemistry Professor John Kalivas's chemistry laboratory, is one of 60 undergraduates nationwide to be selected to present a research poster at the national Council on Undergraduate Research Posters on the Hill event April 23-24.

The Council on Undergraduate Research received more than 800 applications for this event, which will be held on Capitol Hill April 23-24. U.S. Senators and Representatives, their staffs, representatives of various agencies and possibly from the executive branch, will attend the event. Higgins will meet with Idaho Senators James Risch and Mike Crapo while he is in Washington, D.C.

This is the second consecutive year that an undergraduate student working in Kalivas’s chemistry laboratory has been selected to present at this event.

"It is a great honor to be chosen from so many applicants to represent ISU at the CUR posters on the hill. I've been able to go to other conferences while doing research with Dr. Kalivas and this will be a great way to end," said Higgins, 22, from Kuna.

The title for the research is "Assessment of a new similarity measure for local calibration modeling." Higgins began doing research in Kalivas’s laboratory in May 2010.

"Dr. Kalivas has been a great help throughout my entire time here at ISU and has had a big part in my decision to attend graduate school next year to pursue my Ph.D. in chemistry," Higgins said. "He has also given me many opportunities that I would never have gotten had I not decided to join his research group, such as attend multiple conferences around the country including traveling to Washington, D.C. this April."
