Idaho State University students compete in the Fall 2013 Clark S. Carlile Memorial Speaking Competition

December 12, 2013
ISU Marketing and Communications

Six students from business and professional speaking classes competed for cash prizes in the Fall 2013 Clark S. Carlile Memorial Speaking Competition.

The twice-yearly contest is made possible by a generous endowment from the late Professor Emeritus Clark S. Carlile, who taught for many years at ISU. This semester, sophomore Brock Sondrup of Idaho Falls, who is majoring in organizational communication, took first-place honors with his presentation “The Game of Music.” Jenny Thomas of Blackfoot, a senior outdoor education major, placed second with her explanation of “The Meninges: The Brain’s Protective Covering.” Third-place honors went to senior communication major, Joe Redd from Chubbuck whose topic was “How an AED Saves Lives.” The competitors employ techniques they have learned in the classroom to bridge the gap between lay audiences and the highly technical information they are presenting.

Judges for the competition were: Susan Norby, occupational health nurse for Union Pacific Railroad; Tony Lovgren, manager of customer service support operations and labs for ISU Information Technology Services; and Valerie Davids, ISU Student Activities coordinator. Instructors Jackie Czerepinski and Sharon Sowell, who teach the Business and Professional Speaking course, were hosts and moderators for the event.
