Idaho State University College of Pharmacy faculty, students and staff will provide free flu vaccinations to the first 100 guests who register for adult flu shots during the Pharmacy Open House, slated for Friday, Oct. 4, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the College of Pharmacy, 970 S. 5th Ave. in Pocatello.

ISU employees can receive a shot with their current insurance card.

These shots are a $30 value and will be available for this price after the first 100 are given.  The open house is being held in conjunction with a two-day Renovation Celebration at the College. Many changes have taken place at the historic Leonard Hall including the installation of a historic pharmacy artifacts exhibit, renovation of the Student Learning Center and the unveiling of the Colleges first-ever donor wall. Student organizations will also be in attendance to provide health screenings and education to the public.

Every year the ISU College of Pharmacy invites the community to come learn more about the changing role of a pharmacist. Pharmacists are becoming a more visible member of a patient’s health care team and can answer questions that might otherwise require a trip to the doctor.

The American Pharmacists Association says that consumers should look to their pharmacists to provide medication-counseling services, including drug regimen reviews and drug interaction checks; coordination of patient care with physicians and other health care providers; and monitoring of side effects.  Pharmacists can also perform limited patient testing, such as cholesterol screening, glucose monitoring and blood pressure checks for serious health-threatening problems.
