Idaho State University-Meridian’s Galen Louis sets up endowment to help public health students fund research

Galen Louis, who is retiring Dec. 31 as director of Idaho State University's Master of Public Health Program, has started a scholarship fund to help MPH students with research and thesis projects.

The fund is at $8,200 – $1,800 shy of its $10,000 goal, according to Joan Hansen, Division of Health Sciences development director.  The endowment will operate off of interest, preserving the fund's principal and insulating it from state budget cuts.

Louis, an assistant professor, has contributed $5,600 and hopes friends, colleagues and alumni will contribute in any amount they choose.  He recalls his days as a college student and how difficult it was finding money to pay for student research.

Under Louis' leadership, the MPH Program has doubled enrollment to approximately 60 full- and part-time students and achieved nationally recognized accreditation.

Louis says the endowment is his way of thanking his employer of 17 years and the students he has had the pleasure of teaching and mentoring.

Many ISU-MPH graduates hold top jobs in the international, state and community health arenas.

"I am very proud of all of them," said Louis.
