Idaho Press Club recognizes IMNH radio program

“In Step with Lewis and Clark,” the grant-funded radio program created by Idaho Museum of Natural History program manager Kristin Fletcher, was awarded third place for Light Feature Report at the 2006 Excellence in Journalism Awards sponsored by the Idaho Press Club this spring.

Each year the Idaho Press Club solicits nominations for programs which appeared during 2006 in a host of media — daily, weekly and student newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. Their goal is to recognize the “best in Idaho journalism.”

“In Step with Lewis Clark” was the result of an almost $30,000 grant from the Idaho Governor’s Lewis & Clark Trail Committee. Federal funds were disseminated through Congress to each state along the Lewis & Clark Trail to sponsor projects that celebrated the 200-year anniversary of Lewis’ and Clark’s historical journey.

This year-long project culminated in a 12-part radio series. Each three-minute segment was co-produced by Fletcher and independent radio producer Erin Gray in partnership with KISU, the NPR affiliate on the ISU campus.  Each segment was narrated by Kristin Fletcher and featured original flute music by Hovia Edwards, a Grammy-nominated Shoshone-Bannock tribal member. The segments were delivered every two weeks between May and November 2006 to regional NPR affiliates.
