New student orientation isn’t all about the workshops any more. This year, the Idaho State University News Student Orientation office is combining traditional student orientation workshops with outdoor activities in hopes that students will establish a support network with fellow students and learn the skills necessary to make their first year of college a successful one.

The camp takes place Aug. 20-23 at various locations. The participants will spend three days and camp two nights together.

“Hopefully, 20 years from now (camp participants) will be saying, ‘I met my best friend at ISU Camp Bengal,” said Jason Schlegel, NSO and Student Activities coordinator.

Some of the camp’s itinerary includes:

•    Aug. 20, Kickoff, 8-10 am., Hutchinson Quadrangle; climbing wall, geocaching and kayaking, 10:10 a.m.-12:40 p.m.; “Pluralism and the University Culture” lecture, 1:50-2:50 p.m.; “Academic Success” lecture, 6:25-7:30 p.m., Camp Taylor; Star Gazing, 9:45-10:30 p.m.

•    Aug. 21, “The Library and You,” 2:20-3:20 p.m., Eli Oboler Library; Campus tour, 3:10-4:30 p.m.; board breaking, 6-9:30 p.m., Quad; camp out on Quad 11 p.m.-7 a.m.
