When the Idaho Legislature passed Senate Bill 53 on March 11, 1901, it established the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most consequential workforce institutions.
The Academy of Idaho opened in 1902 with 40 students in two branches: a College Preparatory School and a Technical School focused on agriculture, domestic science and mechanics. The institution’s technical identity deepened in 1915 when it was renamed the Idaho Technical Institute (ITI), a move celebrated by students who placed a giant “T” for “The Tech” on Pocatello’s Red Hill.
The Evolution of Applied Learning
As time went on, the Tech’s name evolved alongside the regional workforce. By the time ITI became Idaho State University, its Technical School branch eventually became known as the School of Vocational-Technical Education. In April 1991, it was renamed the School of Applied Technology to signal a curriculum that blended scientific theory with hands-on application. In June 2001, the University elevated the division to the College of Technology, placing it on equal footing with the University’s other academic units.
Deb Thompson, former associate dean, said that throughout its history, the College has significantly evolved as workforce education became increasingly technical. For example, in the 1970s, the institution transitioned to offering Career Pathways and Tech Prep, allowing students to “stack” technical credits toward a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. Today, the College utilizes more than 35 industry advisory committees to ensure programs remain aligned with regional needs.

The road to 2027
“Industry wasn’t simply looking for degrees—it was looking for people with skills,” said former dean, Scott Rasmussen. “The College of Technology has always prepared students to contribute from day one.”
Now, heading into the 2026-2027 academic year, the College is introducing new programs to expand student options.
Applied Artificial Intelligence Certificate
Builds on decades of computing education, focusing on automation and data-driven technologies.
Agricultural business and production technology program
Trains students in agribusiness management, ag finance and diverse crop and livestock production systems.
Interactive media design
Prepares students for game development and digital content.
Barbering certificate
Enhances the cosmetology offerings.
Jerry Anhorn, the former dean of the College of Technology, said he’s optimistic about where the college is headed.
“The College of Technology is strategically positioned to serve Idaho well into the future by evolving in areas like nuclear energy and commercial aviation. For 125 years, ISU has remained true to its original 1901 mandate of empowering students with the practical skills required to power the regional economy.”
