Resources Available to International Students

 

New Student Orientation

Upon arrival, international students are required to attend Idaho State University New Student Orientation. The following topics and presentations are a part of orientation or offered throughout the semester as workshops.

  • Rules and Regulations for Maintaining F-1 Visa Student Status – F-1 Visas are required for most international students.
  • Culture Shock – This presentation explores what culture shock is and the campus resources available to help students experiencing it.
  • Academic Success – This includes advise on how to succeed in college, expectations and differences in the U.S. system of education and campus resources available to help students succeed.
  • Registration and Advising Resources
  • Multi-cultural Presentation by the EO/AA & Diversity Office
  • Academic Honesty and Avoiding Plagiarism
  • Public Safety Presentation
  • Counseling Services through the Counseling and Testing Center

International Programs Office Advising

IPO offers the following services in support of international students

  • Two Immigration Advisors – Assist students in maintaining their status and seeking benefits related to their immigration status.
  • Undergraduate Academic Advisor – Assists international students with course scheduling, academic success, specialized advising to address cultural differences or barriers, cultural and academic adjustment, study plans and projected GPA calculations.
  • Academic Advising for International Students Workshop – Students experiencing academic difficulties are especially encouraged to attend this workshop. Topics include study and time management skills, responsibilities and expectations of students, general registration and advising policies, scholarship requirements (sponsored students), tutoring services and other academic resources.

 

Other Important Campus Resources for International Students

The following resources at ISU are also available and used by international students on a regular basis.

  • Central Academic Advising
  • Student Success Center
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - serves all non-native speakers of English at ISU. Focus is on American language and culture for academic and professional purposes. Offers the following courses:
    • AMST 1100 – Introduction to American Culture and Language
      “This active, participation oriented class examines not-so-obvious daily American life to enable you to better understand American culture and the language used by your professors and classmates”
    • ENGL 1100 – Introduction to Academic Speaking and Writing
      This course helps non-native speakers of English who are new to the American university bridge into ISU standards and expectations. Receive ESL appropriate feedback and answers to cultural questions that are not part of the regular ISU classroom process. In addition to regular classes, each student receives an hour of individual tutoring in problem areas each week.
  • Counseling and Testing – This office offers a wide range of services to all ISU students.
  • Cultural Student Organizations – These organizations allows students to share their cultures and collaborate with others. These clubs hold many events throughout the year that are open to the Pocatello community. These events provide international, cultural and social interactions that enhance the experience of ISU international and resident students.

The International Student Association seeks to enhance international awareness, cultural diversity and languages among students of different nations and resident students.
