Here for a Good Time and Hopefully a Long Time

Hafa adai! My name is Maiah and I was raised in Idaho but consider my home to be Guam. I am a third year student here at Idaho State University. I am studying to be an occupational therapist because I love the aspect of holistic care in OT. This means that I get the opportunity to be in school for quite a while, but I plan to make it worthwhile.

To keep me motivated with school, I do my best to enjoy all the simple things. This includes sporadic naps, using my espresso machine frequently, spontaneous trips, a warm blanket on a cold morning, random smiles, wearing my favorite clothes, and spending a bit too much on food. Food is the easiest and fastest way to make a 6/10 day feel like a 10/10 for me. I love making time to eat my favorite foods with friends or cooking a typical poor-college-student meal at one in the morning. The ideal spread includes a variation of noodles with a random protein source (spam or Costco chicken are my personal favorites). I especially love making traditional Chamorro food and sharing it with friends, peers, and mentors. I consider all these simple since they are often overlooked, especially when you are having a bad day.

Bad days are inevitable, and college can sometimes feel like you will have one everyday. Adjusting to strict professors, unstimulating lectures, and rigorous course materials can be a lot to handle.  Especially, when you are also expected to maintain an “exciting” social life. As a mentor, I wish to share resources that will help to ease any of these stressors for you. College can be a weird time because there is a lot to learn, explore, and experience emotionally. However, you do not always have to experience it alone. My goal is to provide a welcoming and comfortable space to guide my mentees through a new chapter in their lives.
