Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club today announced it will donate $30,000 to the youth head concussion education and prevention program, sponsored by Dr. Caroline Faure, Ed.D., assistant professor in the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education at Idaho State University. The donation from Wal-Mart will help create a grass-roots education program for coaches in youth sports, aimed at assisting them in better identifying the symptoms of concussions and how to prevent and manage concussions when they occur. While the public and biologists are enjoying the rare opportunity to view sockeye salmon in Idaho’s upper Salmon River this year, an Idaho State University research professor has taken looks at Gem State sockeye salmon runs going back thousands of years.
Today’s fisheries managers are thrilled by the return of hundreds of fish to the Sawtooth Valley, but historically the run consisted of tens of thousands of sockeye, according to Idaho State University research professor Bruce Finney, Ph.D. (more…)
Idaho State University will increase fees for the use of Holt Arena by the start of the fall 2008 semester, the first such increase in at least a decade, ISU officials have announced.
Faced with rising costs and the need for renovations to the popular facility, the University will implement increases in rental and facility fees and will charge for parking for designated events.
The changes bring the arena’s fee structure in line with comparable facilities in the Intermountain West, officials said.
The University will continue to seek public and private funding for renovations, said Kent Tingey, D.A., vice president for university advancement. (more…)

A 10-member team of scientists with links to Idaho State University is heading into Yellowstone National Park for about a two-week period this August to test their theories of the effects of wildfire on natural ecosystems and stream ecology.
This summer is the 20th anniversary of the 1988 Yellowstone fires that burned about 1.2 million acres total, including about 793,000 acres within the park, nearly 36 percent of the park’s total acreage. (more…)
