Kate's Artist Statement

"Any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again."

-Homer, The Iliad

My work examines the intersection of mortality and memory through gesturally based charcoal drawing, as well as acrylic and gouache painting on paper. Within humanity is an overwhelming desire to retain the finite- which I believe denotes the eternalnature of the spirit. Picture-taking, journaling, scrapbooking, sentimental objects and mementos: all these activities and objects signify a deep yearning to remember the feelings associated with the finite events of inherently finite mortal existences. The faded 80’s wedding photo on a bedside table was once a tangible, physical moment- plucked from the limitations of memory and made immortal for repeated. Most recently I’ve focused on the boundaries of individual memory as they relate to relationships with others. The awareness that every person has a story as complicated and multifaceted as one’s own is easily forgotten in the haze of adultish responsibilities; so I have engaged in regularly welcoming modelsinto my studio who have allowed me to create a visual biography. While I work from a reference image, my model tells me their life story. To paint the portrait of a person is nothing new, but now, to me, the image of each person is a living record of the time we spent together and I remember who travelled the world, who is getting ready to have a baby, who is obsessed with dinosaurs, all the devastating losses and unspeakable joys. Each piece is imbued with a deep love, taking the feelings related to the memory of each person and creating a work which will condense those feelings into an immortalizing object. The paper substrate I use is unconventional for painting- the viewer might notice a warping effect onsome of the work displayed, made more obvious by the white border around a majority of the pieces. I use these techniques to mundanize the piece. The viewer should not forget that the work they are observing is a material object; it is a temporal representation of an intangible memory.
