Brief Biography:

My background is Engineering Mechanics (Ph.D.) and Mechanical Engineering (B.S. and M.S.). I am a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Graduate Program Director for the Measurement and Control Engineering Program as well as the Mechanical Engineering Program. I currently serve as the chair of the Technical Committee on Model Identification and Intelligent Systems of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as well as the associate director of the Measurement and Control Engineering Research Center (MCERC). Prior to joining ISU, I was an associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering with Indiana Institute of Technology, and an Assistant Professor with Lake Superior State University. My industrial background includes work with compound and chemical mixing machinery, design of large scale food processing machine components, transportation and power transfer systems, as well as computer software and calculator development.

Research Interests:

My research interests revolve around engineering challenges found in the field of biomedical and aerospace engineering, with some topics in energy or materials. Many of these investigations require accurate models to describe the sometimes complex dynamics of the system, hence I have spend time with modeling and system identification. To improve performance and/or design specificiations, control algorithms and intelligent based optimization algorithms are used. My research in the field of controls centers around adaptive and robust, hard and soft computing controllers, system identification, as well as genetic algorithms, tabu search, particle swarm, and ant colony optimization. Current research projects include myoelectric signal analysis and identification, diabetic neuropathy, vibration mitigation and control of space structures, civil structures, electro active polymer control for adaptive optics, star tracker devices, active flow control, etc. A more detailed list is provided under the research link of this page.
