The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educator test measures of basic literacy skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. They are pre-professional skills tests that are used to determine whether teacher candidates possess the academic skills needed for program entry and career success.
Tests are given at the ISU Counseling and Testing Center, which is located in Graveley Hall, Building 15, Room 351. The tests given at the Pocatello center are computer-based only.
To register, visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) online or call the toll free line at 1-800-853-6773. You may enter your zip code and may take the test at your closest testing center. Please be sure to select ISU as the college to receive your test scores. When registering, payment for the test(s) must be made with a credit card.
Unofficial reading and math scores will be received immediately. All other official scores will be mailed within 3-4 weeks.
Minimum scores needed to pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators are:
- Math 162
- Reading 168
- Writing 165

Study and preparation are strongly encouraged for the test. A study guide can be purchased at the ISU Bookstore, online through Educational Testing Service or your favorite retailer. General information and study tips can be found on the ETS website. The College of Education Kent Center and the ISU Center for Teaching and Learning (Student Success Center) can also help with the writing portion. Additionally, current students have access to the Praxis Study Materials Moodle Room and the Kent Center Praxis Practice lab.
Praxis scores that do not meet the minimum score requirement must be retaken.

Those with a documented disability or those for whom English is not their primary language may receive accommodations for taking the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators. Contact ETS directly for details.
The Praxis II tests are a series of achievement tests that assess subject-matter knowledge and principles of learning and teaching. Consistent with the rules of the Idaho State Board of Education, all graduates from the Idaho State University College of Education recommended for initial Idaho certification must obtain the required passing score on the Praxis II Content Test(s) in each subject area for which they are being recommended for certification. The Idaho State Board of Education requires all candidates recommended for State of Idaho teacher certification to meet qualifying scores on the Praxis II Subject Area Test(s) in their teaching field(s).

Praxis II exams are not offered on a regular basis. You must plan ahead.
Candidates must take and pass the required Praxis II test(s) in their major and minor teaching areas the semester prior to student teaching.
