Graduate Learning Goals

The master's program in sociology prepares you for professional employment or pursuit of a Ph.D. in sociology or related fields. We emphasize sociological theory, research methods, and analytical skills. Our intimate program offers students the opportunity to work closely with faculty on research and teaching.

The program requirements consist of 33 credits, comprehensive exams, and the completion of a MA thesis.


  • Advanced understanding of sociological theories and how these theories can elucidate social issues and frame research.
  • Advanced knowledge of research methods.
  • Ability to design and conduct quantitative and qualitative sociological research.
  • Ability to present sociological research and theory, orally and in writing.
