Sign Language Studies Minor

Sign Language Studies minor is designed primarily for upper division students (juniors-seniors) who have a related major (ELEM ED, FCS, CSD, SEC ED, SPED) and are not A.S. Degree seeking. Most will be continuing for a Master of Science (M.S.) in Deaf Education. The minor can be extended over 3 to 4 years. This minor study consists of brief introduction to the language and culture of Deaf Americans and in no way prepares students to work as sign language interpreters. The Minor is offered on the Meridian and Pocatello campuses. 

In addition to the ISU General Education Objective requirements, the following classes (16 credits) are required:

CSD 1126 Deaf Studies (2 cr)

CSD 1151/1151L ASL I (4 cr)

CSD 1152/1152L ASL II (4 cr)

CSD 2205 Introduction to Professions in Communication Sciences (3 cr)

CSD 2256 Deaf Culture and Community (satisfies General Objective 9) (3 cr)


A minimum of 18 departmental course credits are required. Students may choose from the following list of elective courses to reach the minimum 18 credits.

CSD 3352 Depiction in American Sign Language 3 cr
CSD 4420 Clinical Processes Adult 3 cr
CSD 4435 Speech and Hearing Science 3 cr
CSD 4435L Speech and Hearing Science Laboratory 1 cr
SPED 3330 The Exceptional Child 3 cr
