December Stress from Finals?

December 2021

Final exams, papers, and projects are here, on top of other obligations such as training and work. No pressure! Here are some tips to keep your body and mind energized for the home stretch...

Get a full night of sleep:

  • The recommended amount of sleep is between 7-9 hours per day for adults.
  • You probably want to budget enough hours during the day to study for finals week. However, your brain needs time to consolidate everything you’ve learned into your memory. That’s where sleep comes in!
  • Pulling "all-nighters" deprives your body and makes you susceptible to getting sick as the immune system also weakens. Sleep is a natural source of energy that gives you the energy to study and keeps your immune system healthy.

Three meals with beans and fresh vegetables

Nourish your body with balanced meals:

  • Eat a balanced meal consisting of protein, grains, and vegetables. Although there is no right way to eat, it is good to provide your body with nutrients throughout the day. A well-balanced meal will keep your energy levels constant and help power you through those rough studying sessions.
  • When you’re studying for long periods, preparing meals and snacks in bulk will make your life much easier. By doing this, you are less likely to experience a sugar crash from indulging in a high amount of carbohydrates.

Make time for breaks:

  • Set aside time for yourself for some physical activity. Exercising boosts blood flow to the brain, supplying it with more nutrients that lead to mood-enhancing effects.
  • Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous and can be done in small increments. You can simply take a walk around the library, walk along hallways, or if you are at home, follow along with a couple of yoga or stretching tutorials on YouTube.
  • Quick breaks help reduce stress, allowing the mind to take a break.

Lastly, listen to your body:

  • Be mindful about what your body wants.
  • Hungry? Thirsty? Sleepy?
  • Take steps to replenish what your body is asking for because you will study best when your body is at its best.
