Scholarship Deferment/Hold

Idaho State University will hold students' scholarships if a student's attendance at ISU is interrupted for medical reasons, military deployment, church service, or other select reasons, provided that a student meets certain criteria.

New Students

Students who received a scholarship offer and were fully admitted to ISU but will not be attending until a later date due to medical reasons, military deployment, church service, or other approved reasons will need to complete the “Admission Deferment Request Form” by August 1 of the year they were initially admitted.

This request form will act as your "Deferment for admissions" and ensure that you will be considered for the scholarship awarding index that is in place at the time of your return. Your award will be based upon your GPA (as of the scholarship deadline) at the time of your return.  For homeschool students and those with a GED, the ACT or SAT scores (as of the scholarship deadline) will be used for awarding.

Grant funded, endowed and annual (i.e. those in BOSS) 1 semester (or year) awards cannot be held due to the funding allocations and the need to re-award.

Students who receive scholarships outside of ISU will need to contact the outside agency about possible deferment.

If an admitted student is awarded financial aid and plans to defer their enrollment, the student must cancel their financial aid with ISU Financial Aid by calling (208) 282-2756 or emailing Students will need to reapply for financial aid for the semester in which they plan to enroll and meet the appropriate deadlines at that time.

Continuing Students

Students who have attended 1 semester or greater at ISU with scholarships, are required to complete a "Scholarship Hold Request Form” through the scholarship office.

This request form will act as their Deferment (Hold) Form for any scholarships (as long as funding is still available for these programs upon their return).

Only "renewable" institutionally funded scholarships can be held for eligible students. Grant funded; 1 semester (or year) awards can not be held due to the funding allocations and the need to re-award.

If awarded scholarships by outside agencies, students must contact these individuals separately.

For continuing students' scholarship(s) to be placed on hold while they are away from ISU for a specified period of time, we require that the student must attend at least 1 full-time semester prior to their departure and meet the minimum criteria for continuation of their scholarship(s) during the semester(s) they attend prior to leaving.

Students should complete a Hold Request Form and submit verification of reason for leaving (i.e. mission call letter, doctor's note, military deployment notification, etc.). The documentation is used to verify the departure/return dates.

Our general policy is that scholarships can be held for up to 2 years (or 4 semesters), depending on the documented departure/return dates. However, if a student's departure and return are timed such that they must miss five semesters of school (leave in middle of a semester and returning in middle of another semester), we will hold the scholarship(s) for 5 semesters.

NOTE: Students that received an institutionally funded, renewable scholarship(s) are required to meet the requirements for renewal of the scholarship(s) during the last semester they attended prior to leaving or they will not be eligible for renewal of the scholarship(s).
