Undergraduate Probation and Dismissal Policy

Academic standing is calculated once at the end of the semester.

To maintain “academic satisfactory progress” and avoid academic probation, an undergraduate student must maintain an Idaho State University GPA of 2.0.

Undergraduate students on Academic Warning, Probation One, or Probation Two who attain a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher, but whose cumulative ISU GPA is still below 2.0, will remain at their current level of academic probation (Academic Warning, Probation One, or Probation Two) with the corresponding credit limitation of 13, 9, or 6, as specified below.

Good Academic Standing

Students are considered to be in Good Academic Standing at Idaho State University unless their Idaho State University GPA places them on academic probation.

Undergraduate students on Academic Warning, Probation One, or Probation Two who attain a cumulative ISU GPA of 2.0 or higher are automatically removed from warning or probation and moved to Good Academic Standing.

Academic Probation

Undergraduate students whose cumulative Idaho State University GPA does not meet a minimum of 2.0 will be placed on Academic Warning.

Students on Academic Warning
  • Are limited to attempting 13 credits for the next semester of attendance.
  • Are required to complete the Online Probation Workshop.
  • Are expected to meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes.

Undergraduate students on Academic Warning who do not earn a 2.0 semester GPA (and whose cumulative ISU GPA is less than 2.0) will be placed on Probation One.

Students on Probation One
  • Are limited to attempting 9 credits for the next semester of attendance
  • Are required to complete the Online Probation Workshop.
  • Are expected to meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes.

Undergraduate students on Probation One who do not earn a 2.0 semester GPA (and whose cumulative ISU GPA is less than 2.0) will be placed on Probation Two.

Students on Probation Two
  • Are limited to attempting 6 credits for the next semester of attendance.
  • Are required to complete the Online Probation Workshop.
  • Are expected to meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes.

Undergraduate students are notified at mid-semester if they are earning an unsatisfactory grade in any class.

Academic Dismissal

Undergraduate students on Probation Two who do not earn a 2.0 semester GPA (and whose cumulative ISU GPA is less than 2.0) will be dismissed from the university.

Graduate Probation and Dismissal Policy

Academic Warning/Probation

Graduate students are placed on academic warning when their grades and/or GPA are unsatisfactory. Graduate students are required to have a minimum overall 3.0 GPA. Anything below a 3.0 GPA will place graduate students on academic warning and can also result in dismissal. One or more grades of C or lower can also place graduate students on academic warning and can also result in dismissal. Students who are on Academic Warning or Probation are limited in the number of credits they are allowed to take (13 for Graduate Students). These credit limits are absolute and are not petitionable.

Academic Probation at ISU has three levels, each with a corresponding credit limit: Academic Warning (13 credits maximum), Probation One (9 credits maximum), and Probation Two (6 credits maximum). Students on Probation Two can be dismissed from the university.
