Pineda has a Master of Fine Arts Degree in piano and composition from the California Institute of the Arts, and bachelor’s degree from the Mannes College of Music. She is currently an adjunct professor at Glendale Community College, and runs a private studio of piano and composition students. Her quartet will include Pineda on the piano, Kris Tiner, trumpet, Ivan Johnson, bass, and Tina Raymond, drums.
The quartet will perform two sets on Feb. 3 from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Portneuf Valley Brewery. There is a $10 cover charge, and all proceeds will benefit the ISU Jazz program.
On Feb. 4 beginning at 7:30 p.m., the ISU Big Band, under the direction of ISU jazz director Jonathan Armstrong, will perform a few songs and then the Cathlene Pineda Quartet will perform a set. At the end of the evening, there will be a joint performance with the ISU Big Band plus the Cathlene Pineda Quartet. Tickets for the concert in Jensen Hall are $8 for adults, $6 for ISU faculty, $4 for pre-college and free for ISU students, and can be purchased at the door.
As part of its trip, the Cathlene Pineda Quartet will also listen to 14 high school jazz bands from eastern Idaho and give feedback on their performances based off their expertise. This will take place on Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Jensen Hall.
