 Dietetic Internship Program Overview



Internship Components: Community is the program emphasis, however, interns also spend time in clinic and food service rotations.  Interns rotate through various sites including: medical centers, long-term care facilities, local health departments, local school districts,  diabetes centers, dialysis centers, and out-patient clinics.
Number of Positions: There are eighteen (18) internship positions - Eight (8) interns in Meridian/Treasure Valley, and ten (10) interns in Pocatello (2 of whom will complete rotations in Twin Falls, Idaho)
Selection Process: Applicants are primarily ranked according to their grade point average (minimum 3.0), work experience and references. Finalists will go through a 15-20 minute interview.
Internship Length: The length of the internship is 34 weeks over two academic semesters (9 months): Fall (August through mid-December) and Spring (mid-January through mid-May).  In extreme circumstances an intern's timeframe maybe extended up to 13.5 months (150% of the original 9 month plan).
Weekly Time Requirement: Approximately 40 hours-per-week are spent in seminars and rotations. An additional 20 hours-per-week are usually required for preparation and completing assignments.  Interns work in facilities Monday through Thursday and some Fridays.  About eight Fridays each semester are spent in Seminar.  Travel time has not been included, but some rotations are 20-50 miles away.

Graduation and Program Completion

Passing each semester requires completing all rotations and Seminar with at least a satisfactory grade. Interns receiving a satisfactory grade (S) for both semesters, and completing a minimum of 1200 hours supervised practice will receive a Certificate of Completion, Idaho State University, Dietetic Internship Program and an Internship Verification Statement.  Application for ISU DI graduation deadline is Friday of midterm week, spring semester. ISU Office of the Registrar graduation application.  Graduates will be eligible to sit for the national registration exam.
