What's the difference between Graduation and Commencement?
"Graduation" and "Commencement" reflect two different aspects of your academic career. "Graduation" means actually finishing and completely fulfilling your degree requirements resulting in a diploma. In other words, "graduation" is the technical obtainment of credits to receive a degree.
"Commencement" is the symbolic ceremony marking the closing of your academic career where you receive commendation for your hard work. It is an opportunity for you, your family, friends, and the Bengal community to celebrate your accomplishment.
How do I apply to graduate? When do I have to apply?
Undergraduate students can apply for graduation via BengalWeb. Click on the "Academic Tools" tab and then "Apply to Graduate" under the Graduation Planning channel.
For undergraduate students, graduation applications must be submitted no later than the Friday of midterm week of the semester in which you plan to graduate, although it is recommended that you submit your application for graduation at least one semester before your anticipated graduation date.
Graduate students should complete the online form during the first two weeks of the semester in which you plan to graduate. Students should have an approved final program of study prior to submitting the application.
How much is the graduation application fee?
All candidates for graduation are required to pay a non–refundable $20.00 graduation fee per application.
What GPA do I need to graduate with honors?
Refer student to the Office of the Registrar for 2018 commencement. Next year the GPA for honors is set and should be listed in the new 2018-2019 catalog.
What attire should I wear for Commencement?
Approved Commencement dress consists of black robe, black mortarboard, appropriate colored tassel and, for graduate students, the appropriate hood. To determine the regalia you will need for commencement, contact the ISU bookstore at 208-282-3237.

Where do I buy my regalia?
Academic regalia (cap and gown) will be available for purchase in person at the Bookstore, or by calling 208-282-3237. The deadline to order is March 27, 2018. Additionally, you can order class rings and announcements at Grad Finale or online.
How do I get a stole or cords?
Stoles can be purchased in the Bookstore along with your regalia. Honor cords are available through the Registrar’s Office. For Veteran honor cords, contact the military education benefits coordinator in the Office of the Registrar.
Do I have to buy my regalia, or can I rent it?
Please purchase your regalia through the University Bookstore.
Can I wear a borrowed cap and gown?
You are welcome to borrow regalia, but please make sure you wear the appropriate robe for your degree level (undergraduate, master’s and doctoral). All robes should be black.
On what side do I wear my tassel?
Undergraduates wear their tassels on the right side prior to Commencement. Graduate students wear theirs on the left.
I live out of town. How can I purchase and pick up my regalia?
You will order your regalia through the Bookstore 208-282-3237. They have shipping options available.
Can I order my regalia online?
Regalia orders cannot be placed online. Please visit the University Bookstore or call 208-282-3237.
Will the ceremony be available online?
Yes. The ceremony can be viewed live or after the ceremony on ISU’s YouTube channel.
Are tickets required for the Commencement ceremony?
Graduates may invite as many guests as they wish. No tickets are required.
Is participation in Commencement Rehearsal mandatory?
No. While the rehearsal is not required, you are strongly encouraged to attend in order to make your Commencement experience as seamless and satisfying as possible.
When is Commencement Rehearsal?
The Friday before Commencement at 3:30 p.m. in Holt Arena.
Do I need to wear my cap and gown to rehearsal?
No, regalia is not necessary for the rehearsal.
Can I decorate my cap?
Yes, but when considering ornamentation, we ask that you honor the achievements being celebrated and respect the dignity of the occasion.
What time is commencement?
The ceremony begins at 10 AM. Graduates need to arrive by 9 AM.
How long does the ceremony last?
Approximately 2.5 hours
I can’t stay for the whole ceremony. What should I do?
If you are attending Commencement, plan to stay for the entire ceremony. Graduates are discouraged from leaving early, as it is disruptive and disrespectful to their peers.
At what point in the ceremony will I walk across the stage?
Undergraduates will line up by college in the order in which they arrive the morning of graduation. Graduates do not need to be seated in order of degree or name. Graduate degrees will be conferred first, beginning with terminal degrees. Undergraduates will follow. This process will be demonstrated at commencement rehearsal.
How can I be sure my name will be pronounced correctly?
While we cannot guarantee the reader will make no mistakes, you can increase the chances that your name will be pronounced correctly by coming to rehearsal. The reader will be available to meet with students there, as well as the morning of Commencement between 9 and 9:30 AM.
Will my name be in the program?
If your graduation application has been accepted by the deadline (April 1, 2018), your name will appear in the program.
How will my name be listed in the program?
The program listing will match the name you entered on your application for your diploma.
Will they indicate my degree when I walk across the stage?
Aside from terminal degrees (Ph.D., Pharm.D., etc), degrees and programs will not be announced.
Can my family take pictures?
Guests are welcome to take photos and video from their seats in the stands, but are not allowed on the turf during the ceremony. After the ceremony, everyone is welcome on the turf and there will be several photo stations set up for your use. During the ceremony, Lifetouch Photography will photograph each graduate.
Where can I see my commencement photographs?
Ceremony pictures will be taken by Lifetouch Photography and will be available for viewing and purchase at www.lifetouch.com by May 27, 2018.
When will I get my diploma?
Diplomas will be mailed via first class mail to the address indicated on your graduation application. Diplomas are mailed two to three weeks after your degree has been posted to your transcript, which can take up to five weeks. You will receive an email from email@example.com letting you know when your degree has been posted and a second email from the diploma vendor (Michael Sutter Company) when your diploma has been mailed.
How can I make sure my diploma will be sent to the correct address?
Notify a Graduation Specialist in the Office of the Registrar of any changes in your mailing address as soon as possible (by May 11th at the latest). Once the information for your diploma is sent to our diploma printing vendor, the mailing address cannot be changed.
Please note: Updating your address in BengalWeb will not change where your diploma is mailed.
What do I do if my diploma is incorrect?
If your diploma is incorrect you should contact Idaho State University's Registrar's office. Call 208-282-4874 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Can I get a replacement copy of my diploma?
Yes, you can order a replacement diploma, or additional copies, for a $20 fee by contacting the Office of the Registrar at email@example.com or at (208) 282-4874. Once ordered, a replacement diploma will take 5-10 business days.
How do I get an official copy of my transcript?
Graduates can order transcripts online through the National Student Clearinghouse, ISU's authorized transcript provider. The cost for an official ISU transcript is $7.50 each, plus any delivery method charges.
I have a guest with special needs. Who should I call about seating arrangements?
Call Holt Arena staff at 208-282-4931. Ushers will be available at Commencement to assist guests with special needs.

If I am getting two degrees, can I have two diploma covers?
Yes. One will be given to you at commencement and a second one may be picked up from the Registrar’s Office located in the Museum building.
