Setting a URL

How URLs are generated

The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for a section (page) is generated by the name you give it.

Physical location of name field for a section

The system takes that name, makes all the letters lowercase, and converts spaces and special characters into dashes.

Example

If the homepage of your website has the URL of www.isu.edu/stuff and you created a new section in your hierarchy named 'Corndogs & Mustard Packets'

The URL would for that section would be:

www.isu.edu/stuff/corndogs--mustard-packets/

Keep in mind that if you accidentally put a space at the end of a section name it will result in a dash at the end of the URL.

Each level of your site structure result in a slash in your URL.
For instance, the URL of this page is www.isu.edu/cms/tutorials/basics/urls/

That matches the levels in the site structure

The site structure for the page you are currently viewing

How to tailor a URL

In many cases you need the section name to be something specific because that name is displayed in your navigation. However, that can result in wierd URLs.

T4 has a way to create a URL that is seperate from the section name.

On the General Section Details page under Advanced settings, there is a field called 'Output URI' (Uniform Resource Identifier)

Physical location of output URI on section details

What you put into this field will become the URL for that section.

Example

On the section named 'Corndogs & Mustard Packets', if you set the Output URI to corndogs the URL for that section would become:

www.isu.edu/stuff/corndogs/

The Output URI will only change the URL on the level where the section resides. You cannot change it to www.isu.edu/corndogs/. If you would like to change a URL in that way, please contact us.

Changes the Output URI may result in broken links.

If you change a URI, please check to see if any links to that page are broken.
