The Idaho State University Chamber Choir traveled to England and Scotland for 13 days in May to perform in some of the most historic cathedrals in the world. The choir performed in Edinburgh, York, Newcastle, Worcester, London, Ely, Oxford and Cambridge.

Some of the historic churches they performed in include the Ely Cathedral, the Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburg, Scotland, the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle, the York Minster Cathedral in York and the Worcester Cathedral.

"Some of the churches we performed in were built in the 900's and have been continually used for 1,100 years," said Scott Anderson, Chamber Choir Director and Director of Choral Activities at ISU. "When our group began to sing, we all had the realization of how beautiful we sounded in each space. It was overwhelming."

Kiya Fife, an ISU student who went on the trip, said the trip brought to life the history of music for her.

"The pages of my history books became clearer and real, and everything made more sense," Fife said. "This trip confirmed to me that I made the right decision to pursue music and that music touches people's lives."

Anderson said the trip also solidified ISU's choir program and showed that ISU's program is competitive with schools across the world.

"Someone at every church gave us really rewarding compliments," Anderson said. "The education that our students are receiving is on par with anywhere else in the world." The Chamber Choir performed in front of tourists from Italy, Australia, and Israel, among others.

During the trip, the Chamber Choir had the opportunity to participate in an exchange concert with York High School, whose choir Anderson said is one of the better ones in all of England. After the concert, Anderson extended a formal invitation to the choir director for him and his students to attend the 2019 Idaho International Choral Festival at ISU.

The 2016 Idaho International Choral Festival will take place July 19-24 at ISU, as well as the Trinity Episcopal Church, First Congregational United Church of Christ, First Presbyterian Church, and Pebble Creek Ski Area. Choirs will be coming from Africa, Costa Rica, Poland, Iran, Trinidad and Tobago, the Philippines, the Republic of Georgia, and around the United States. This one of a kind festival takes place at ISU every three years.

"This year we will have a very diverse group of musicians all with very different styles," said Anderson, who is also the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the festival.
