Psychology Chair Shannon Lynch Appointed to Serve on the Committee on Women in Psychology
Professor and chair of the Department of Psychology, Shannon Lynch, has been appointed by the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest to serve on the Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP).
Idaho State University professor and chair of the Department of Psychology, Shannon Lynch, has been appointed by the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest to serve on the Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP).
CWP is a national committee and is generally very competitive. There are only six committee members and they typically serve a three-year term.
“I’m excited to have this opportunity,” Lynch says, “I will learn a lot staying aware of national issues for up to date high profile psychology issues.”
The CWP concerns itself with furthering the major purpose of the American Psychological Association (APA) which is “to advance psychology as a science and a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare.”
Lynch will assist with the committees’ goals to promote the health and well-being of all women, nationally and internationally. The first is to identify and eliminate discriminatory and exploitive practices against all women, nationally and internationally. Second, to promote the unique contributions of women to psychology. Third, enhance women’s leadership within and outside of APA. Fourth, monitor activities of groups within the APA to assess the impact on women. Fifth, collaborate with others as needed to achieve the empowerment of underrepresented groups. Lastly, to promote advocacy on public policy relevant to women, nationally and internationally.
Lynch has taught at Idaho State University since 2004. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in psychopathology, treatment and diversity. Her personal research is about violence against women, women’s mental health and incarcerated women.
