Department News

The Department of Biological Sciences 36th Annual Reception honoring the graduating classes of Summer 2015, Fall 2015, and Spring 2016 was held on Friday, May 6, 2016. Congratulations to all the graduates! Johanna Thalmann was recognized as the 2016 Outstanding Graduate Student, John Gilmer was recognized as the 2016 Outstanding Graduate TA, and Martha Maldonado was recognized as the 2016 Outstanding Student.

Dr. Colden Baxter has been elected president of the Society for Freshwater Science. Over the next three years, he will serve as president-elect, president, and past-president of this international organization. Find out more about SFS.

Quinn Washburn and Savannah Spradlin, students with Dr. Carolyn Weber’s lab, presented their undergraduate research on April 23, 2016, at the annual meeting of the Intermountain Branch of the American Society for Microbiology at Salt Lake City, Utah, entitled: “Addition of zinc, manganese and iron to growth media triggers antibiotic production by bacteria from the lower atmosphere.”

Quinn Washburn, BS Microbiology (December 2015), was accepted into the Graduate Program in Microbiology at Oregon State University, where he will begin his doctoral research in Fall 2016.

Miranda Striluk, MS Microbiology (May 2016), accepted a position as a Research Associate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which she will assume in late May.
