Amanda Smolinski, biology undergraduate student from Idaho Falls working with Sharlene Jolley (Chemistry) and Catherine Black presented her research "Neutron Radiography and X-ray Analysis of Siliceous Marine Sponges: Pseudaxinella lunaecharta" as a poster at the ISU Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 12, as a poster at the American Chemical Society annual awards banquet in Idaho Falls on April 19, and as a presentation at the Idaho Academy of Science & Engineering Symposium in Boise on April 21. This research was also featured in a recent INL newsletter for the Materials & Fuels Complex.

Casetin Lybbert, undergraduate student with Dr. Jason Pilarski, received the 2018 Outstanding Student Award. He is 1 of 12 graduating seniors receiving this award. Students receiving these prestigious awards exhibit a readiness to graduate, high academic achievement, above-average dedication to academic and professional goals and involvement in professional societies. Work experience and community service are also considered. Congratulations Casetin!
Congratulations to Taylor Goodnoe, who recently had the third peer-reviewed publication from her 2016 MS Thesis accepted for publication. Taylor's research was supported by the Career Path Internship program at ISU and by the National Science Foundation.
Congratulations to Heaton Oakes, who was selected as the CPI Intern of Month of April 2018! Heaton has been interning with Dr. Mark Austin's lab since January 2018. Under the supervision of Verona Nicolae, Heaton has been able to gain valuable knowledge relating to experimental design and data compilation, focusing on biomedical research using zebrafish as an animal model. Congratulations to Caitlin Vitale-Sullivan, who won the Best Undergraduate Poster prize in “Sustainability Education / Engagement” at the 9th Annual Sustainability Summit, February 28 - March 1, 2018, at Weber State University. She presented on aspects of her Senior Thesis STEAM project on winter leaf gardens for fourth and fifth graders at Jefferson Elementary School in Pocatello. Her work is funded by the Idaho State Board of Education.

Congratulations to Rebecca Hale (ISU Biology Assistant Research Professor) and Bray Beltran on the newest addition to their family, a baby girl born in December!
Sharee Anderson, former ISU Biology graduate student of Dr. Trent Stephens, is the vice president of Instruction and Student Affairs at the College of Eastern Idaho. Sharee received her Doctor of Arts degree in 2009.
Arthur Talaro, former ISU Biology graduate student of Dr. Rufus Lyman, passed away July 23, 2017. He graduated with a Master of Natural Science degree in Zoology. His thesis was entitled, “The Serum Proteins of the Chinchilla: A Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis by Cellulose Acetate Electrophoresis.” Art was a professor in the Life Sciences Department at Pasadena City College from 1972-1995 before his retirement. Our condolences to his family.

Upcoming Events
There will be a fishing derby on January 27, 2018, at Sportsman’s Park on the west side of American Falls Reservoir which features a $500 1st place prize for the largest trout and a $100 1st place prize for perch. The derby runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is a fundraiser for the Portneuf Unit of American Fisheries Society, a student organization at ISU. There is a $35 per person entry fee.
