Consider Peer Advising
- Are you an undergraduate student looking for a way to become a student leader?
- Do you love helping others succeed?
- Do you want to become a better student yourself?
- Would you like all of this to count toward academic credit?
Central Academic Advising (CAA) is interested in helping you grow in your ability to help others, to become a better communicator, problem solver, and student by joining our advising team.
As an undergraduate Peer Advisor, you will meet with ISU students in a one-on-one setting and help them with class scheduling, planning their degree, exploring majors, and answering a number of academic-related questions. You will also gain insight about the university and your own major.
How to Become a Peer Advisor
All credit levels accepted (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior). You must have a minimum 2.7 ISU GPA and successfully complete a 1 credit course, ACAD 4450 Peer Advising.
To enroll in ACAD 4450 and learn all about being a successful student, gain a behind-the-scenes understanding of ISU curriculum processes, understand our advising structure, and see how you can help other ISU students. After successfully completing this one-semester course, you will be invited to join the Central Academic Advising Peer Advisor team.
As an official CAA Peer Advisor, you will again register for ACAD 4450 and take the course for either 1 credit (class time, plus two hours of advising per week) or 2 credits (class time, plus four hours of advising per week). You can receive up to a total of 6 academic credits through this class and program.
Email the instructor, Karen Fullmer at email@example.com, to request permission to enroll in the course.

What Other Peer Advisors Have Said About Their Experiences
"I enjoy being a peer advisor as it has allowed me to actively become part of the university. I love being able to help confused students as I once was. Peer advising has also personally helped me as it has allowed me to become more of a leader and break out of my comfort zone."
College can be a disorienting experience, as I learned during my freshman year. I wanted to help students by being there with the answers they needed, or knowing the people to send them to for the answers.
Working as a Peer Advisor has given me so much more insight into my educational experience! Not only am I helping fellow students every day, but I'm getting the most out of my time here at ISU. I'm a better student than I have ever been because of what I've learned at Central Academic Advising!
The Peer Advising program gave me an opportunity to be involved with assisting students with their academic careers here at ISU. Peer advising has not only given me upper division credits, an excellent work study, a vast knowledge of academics at ISU, it also has rewarded me with the simple fact of being able to help students.
I have gained a lot of insight from the Peer Advising program by helping current and prospective students gain confidence about their academic life. I love encouraging others to tap into their potential and show them that success is truly possible with the right mindset and resources!
When I first came to the U.S and started scheduling for my first semester in ISU, I had faced so many troubles. However, when I came to the Central Academic Advising to seek for help, everything seemed to be easier and I did feel the welcome and friendliness from everyone who works here. Therefore, that first impression encourages me to become a peer advisor to help other students as I was helped in my first year.
