Academic Standing

Undergraduate Students are in "good academic standing" when they maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better. Academic standing is calculated at the end of each semester.

Students whose calculated cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 will be placed on Academic Warning or Probation. Those students who receive notification that they are "not in good academic standing" should take action as soon as possible. To be automatically removed from warning or probation, students must work to attain a cumulative ISU GPA of 2.0.

Students on any level of Academic Probation (Academic Warning, Probation One, Probation Two) must complete the Students Taking Academic Responsibility (STAR) online workshop.

  • Freshman or Undecided students who are "not in good academic standing" should contact Central Academic Advising for assistance with their advising requirement.
  • Students who have declared their major and are "not in good academic standing" should contact their department advisor for assistance with their advising requirement.

Academic Warning

Academic Warning occurs in a semester when an undergraduate student does not meet the minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the semester.

Students are limited to attempting 13 credits for the next semester; are required to complete the online Probation Workshop, and must meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes the next semester.

Probation One

Probation One occurs in a semester when an undergraduate student on Academic Warning continues to have less than the minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the semester.

Students will be limited to attempting 9 credits for the next semester; are required to complete the online Probation Workshop; and must meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes the next semester.

Probation Two

Probation Two occurs in a semester when an undergraduate student on Probation One continues to have less than the minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the semester.

Students are limited to attempting 6 credits the next semester; are required to complete the online Probation Workshop; and must meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes the next semester.

Dismissal

Students on Probation Two who do not attain a 2.00 semester GPA or 2.00 cumulative GPA will be dismissed from the university.
