Thomas Cole: Schroon Mountain
Thomas Cole: The Oxbox
Schroon Mountain (Oil, 1838)
Compared to many of Cole's wilderness paintings, there's greater openness of landforms in this painting, and combined with the use of warm colors, it creates a lighter, friendlier mode.   The foreground trees aren't as twisted and gnarled as in much of his work.  Too, Schroon Mountain doesn't loom darkly but rather glows in the reflected red of muted sun and fall leaves.
