Thomas Cole: The Oxbow
Thomas Cole: The Oxbox
The Oxbox (Oil, 1836)
In this painting, Cole portrays two states of the land: on the left, it's wilderness, and on the right, it's farm land.  A storm is moving across from the mountaineous wilderness to the rural valley below.  Cole may be suggesting that the two (wilderness and civilization) can coexist together.  Lifegiving rain and clean water originate from wild unspoiled lands.  Thus, man's future rests on keeping the balance between the two.
