Cycling I have been riding bicycles for fun, fitness, competition and transportation since I was seven years old. At the same time that Joe Breeze and Gary Fisher were beginning to transform cruiser bikes into crude (by today’s standards) mountain bikes that could tame the fire roads of Marin County’s Mt. Tamalpais, my friends and I were riding our banana-seat stingrays on the dirt roads and trails of the redwood forest a couple hundred miles north in Humboldt County. When I outgrew the stingrays, production mountain bikes were still nearly a decade into the future, so I got a French 10-speed (back when 10-speed meant 2 chainrings and 5 rear cogs, not 10 rear cogs!) and took to the road. Although I have been an avid bicycle commuter, have done a few tours and have competed in some multi-sport events and mountain bike races, my main cycling passion is road racing. I started racing in 1985 and upgraded to Category 2 in 1993. I currently race in category 1-2 and masters 35-44 events throughout Idaho, Utah, Montana and Wyoming, entering about 25 races each season. Although I have never achieved any great racing results, I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of the sport and remain as enthusiastic about racing and training as when I started. A big reason for my continued enthusiasm is that the riding here in eastern Idaho is so great. We have hundreds of miles of paved roads with very little traffic, and the scenery is great.

To give something back to the sport, I became president in 2000 of Idaho Cycling Enthusiasts (ICE), a Pocatello-based cycling club, and promote and direct numerous cycling events in eastern Idaho. In addition to ICE events, I direct cycling events for the Idaho Special Olympics state games and for the Southeast Idaho Senior Games. I am currently on the Utah Cycling Association Board of Directors, too.
