Westward Vision
The Story of the Oregon Trail
By David Lavender
"Westward Vision" is one of those books you just can't put down. If you have read Mr. Lavender's other books, you know his unique style reads like a page-turning novel. But make no mistake, this is accurate history--and the stories are more compelling than any modern-day best-seller.
The book would probably would have been more accurately named "The Discovery of the Oregon Trail" since Lavender focuses on the earliest part of Trail history: the early expeditions of the mountain men, Lewis and Clark's travels, the folly of the Astorians, and the trailblazing Whitman journey. "Westward Vision" is one of those rare works that succeeds both as history and as entertainment.
J.N. Goodsell, Christian Science Monitor
"The author's descriptions of the great migrations of families westward over the Trail are some of the best this reviewer has ever read."
