Philosophy 450
Second Essay Topic
Due Oct. 21st

Since the first essay  we have examined two comprehensive theories of morality:  those of Mill and Kant.  In this assignment, I’d like you to develop a 4-6 page (typed, double-spaced) essay on a topic of your choice within either Mill's or Kant's theory.  The only criteria I ask you to keep in mind in choosing and developing a topic are these:

1.      The topic should take you into the details of one of these theories, and a significant portion of the paper should be devoted to explaining these details.

2.      The topic should engage one or more of the theories critically.  That is, it should provide a critical evaluation of some aspect of one or both of them.  This could take any number of forms—developing an objection against one of the theories, defending one of them against an objection, defending one theory as superior to the other.  Here as well, the more carefully you can develop and defend your critical evaluation, the better.  Be sure to consider
how a defender of  the theory you are discussing could best respond to any objection you are raising.
