Philosophy 355
Study questions: Rawls, Justice
as Fairness..., Part IV
1. Rawls discusses which economic systems are compatible, and
which incompatible, with justice
as fairness. Which does he think
are incompatible, and why? Which compatible, and why?
2. What distinguishes property-owning democracy from
welfare-state capitalism and from
liberal socialism?
3. How does Rawls distinguish between civic humanism and classical
republicanism? Which does
he think can be endorsed by justice as
fairness?
4. Rawls takes up the issue of the extent to which justice as
fairness can tolerate a wide diversity
of ways of life, religious views, and
conceptions of the good. He considers the example of
small religious sects. To what
extent does he think his theory implies toleration for such
groups, and what are the limits of that
toleration?
