Study questions:  Locke's Second Treatise..., Chpts. 8-12

1.  Given Locke's account of the state of nature, what need is there for individuals to escape
it?  What problems arise in his state of nature? (How do these compare to those that
       Hobbes describes?)

2.  How, and under what conditions, does Locke think we exit the state of nature and enter
into "civil society"? (For example, what do we give up in entering civil society?  What
do we not give up?  How does this compare with Hobbes' account?)

3.  According to Locke, what are the limits of political authority?  What are the proper ends
of government?  What remedies are available for government abuse of power?
