Study questions:  Locke's Second Treatise..., Chpts. 1-5


1.  How does Locke characterize the 'state of nature'?  What rights does he claim that we have
     in the state of nature? (Why do we have them?) 

2.  How does Locke characterize the state of war? 

3.  How does Locke explain the origin of private property? (How does he think individuals can
     come to own something that was previously unowned?)

4.  Compare Locke's account of the state of nature with Hobbes' previous account?  Which is a
      more promising account?  What problems might there be for Locke's account?
