Study questions:  Rachels, Chpts. 9 and 10

1.  How does Rachels explain Kant's distinction between hypothetical and categorical imperatives?
How is this distinction relevant to morality?

2.  According to Kant, what is ultimate moral imperative?  Illustrate its application to a particular
       case using an example.

3.  What problems does Rachels raise for Kant's theory in Chpt. 9?  How might Kant respond
       to these problems?

4.  In Chpt. 10, Rachels discuss another way in which Kant formulated the ultimate moral
imperative (this one focusing on the dignity of humanity).  What is this formulation, and how
might it apply to particular cases?
